What was the (unofficial) buzzword of the interwebs in 2017? Self-care. That word stirs up images of plush robes, clawfoot tubs, cups of warm tea, and candles that evoke a sense of relaxation.

Our time is precious and we often abuse ourselves to cram more than we should into our days.

Regardless of what comes to mind, the essence of what this popular word invites us to do is to take care of ourselves. Our time is precious and we often abuse ourselves to cram more than we should into our days. I’m guilty of wanting to squeeze every extra second of productivity out of my day because it will give me a leg up on tomorrow.
I discovered something that no one will tell you about maximum work productivity. The time you spend toiling hard to accomplish a few extra moments worth of work are stripping you of time you can use to take care of yourself, especially when you’re already fatigued.
As a chronic overachiever and night owl who works a remote job, I know what the pressure is like to get more done. I’ve had to learn to stop and take care of myself so I can have a great work life, but also so I can…you know…LIVE!
Well, here’s the list you came here for:

5 Ways To Self Care At Work

1. Meditation

Starting my day with a good dose of meditations helps me set an intention to be mindful of the world around me and not to worry about all the crap I have to do any given day.
As the day progresses, I find that I need a boost around 2 pm. Instead of grabbing another coffee, I take a 10-15 minute meditation break. This break and a glass of water is far better than a jolt of caffeine that masks my fatigue. Speaking of caffeine…

2. Don’t over-caffeinate

It’s tempting to enjoy a second cup of coffee in the morning and a third in the afternoon, but you’re really not doing yourself any favors.
The temporary jolt of energy will cause you to either crash earlier than expected or throw your sleep cycle off for a given day. Or worse.

3. Find inspiration around you

Everywhere I go, I have a notebook and my cell phone. If I find a quote or hear something that stirs me, I write it down or record it in my phone. Stopping to take notice of something inspirational will give you a boost in your mental game and make you rock and roll through the rest of your day.

4. Disconnect for lunch

Working from home has many perks, but the biggest drawback is that my office, home, and cafeteria (kitchen) are all in the same place.
It’s quite easy to fall into a routine that has you eating at your desk while watching Netflix. This habit must be broken.
Get up. Lace on some walking shoes and go for a walk and listen to a playlist that picks you up. Grab lunch outside in the park or on your back deck, but for the love of God, don’t work during your lunch break. If you’re particularly daring, put your phone and computer in Do Not Disturb mode for maximum disconnection.

5. Love something

I love my family and my friends, but I’m not talking about some people. I’m talking about something.
I bought a succulent a few weeks ago. This plant is not only easy to maintain, but it also gives me something to focus on away from my life. Tending to it and making sure it stays alive has given me time with something that needs nurturing.
With all you have going on, try and focus on yourself for a little while every day. Cut the mental fatigue off at the pass and make life a little more livable each day.
